Operation experience with the optimization system is based on about twelve months of operation. During this period the software system has proved a high availability. Furthermore, the flexibility of the software turned out to be very valuable for accomodating changes in the plant operation during the first year of operation. Due to increased fuel oil prices, the power plant "Werndorf 2" is operated at variable load. At the same time the temperature of the extracted heat which is supplied to the district heating network of the city of Graz has been increased to enlarge the transport capacity of the hot water pipeline. The optimization system identified on average a deviation of 20 MW from the estimated load distribution between the two major power plants, which are operated with coal and fuel oil. Based on fuel costs of 1/2001, the resulting savings of total heat production costs are about 650 Euro per day. Thus annual savings due to optimized heat extraction in the power plant network are exceeding 100.000 Euro.
