The Electricity Technology Roadmap, developed with input from over 200 stakeholder groups from around the world, envisions five key "Destinations" which include 1) strengthening the power delivery system, 2) enhancing customer services, 3) supporting economic growth, 4) resolving the energy/environment conflict and 5) achieving global sustainable growth. The ultimate destination of the Roadmap-global sustainability-is predicated on the world's economies adopting clean energy systems based chiefly on the development of a highly integrated energy system referred to as a "hydrogen-electric economy". This concept extends current discussions of a "hydrogen economy" to fully utilize the complementary roles of electricity and hydrogen. Over the long term, a comprehensive public-private R&D program is the key avenue to developing, demonstrating, and commercializing an efficient, safe, economical hydrogen infrastructure.
