'IMPROVING CCGT REAL TIME OPERATIONS' - An Artificial Intelligence based approach in Genelba MPP

This paper suggests the introduction of the Expert Systems technology, a branch of Artificial Intelligence, to solve long-standing problems such as the avalanche of information received by the operator during plant trips and emergencies. Although Expert Systems have been known for years, their use in the real-time running of a combined cycle power plant constitutes a completely innovative approach. This job takes Genelba CCGT power plant in Argentina as a case study for the implementation of this technology. Such case project has other complementary features like "voice messages" for the operator, containing the root cause of problems and operating recommendations. These characteristics reinforce the novelty of this approach. Genelba is a CCGT merchant power plant located 50 km away from the city of Buenos Aires. It has an output power of 660Mw, based on V94.3A Siemens gas turbines and a 2+2+1 arrangement. The plant is owned by Petrobras Energia and has commercially operated since 1999 in the deregulated and highly competitive Argentinean electric market.
