Since its introduction in the early 1940s, thermal-spraying technology has covered a broad spectrum of applications. This includes examples such as the aerospace industry which produces the wear resistance and abradable coatings in turbines; steel making industry where coatings are used to prevent slag attack on the refractory linings of stoppers; power generation plant where metal layers are coated to prevent and control high temperature corrosion. The coatings are produced on bulky materials such as nickel alloy and aluminium brohze. However, in the face of challenges confronting bioengineering, advanced bioceramic coatings are predominantly being developed. Processing of the hydroxyapatite coatings for hip prostheses and spinal implants can be cited as recent challenges that the biomedical field and thermal spray technology have undertaken.
