The steel E911 (9 percent Cr, 1 percent Mo, 1percent W + Nb + V + N) developed through an experimentalprogramme supported by ECSC funding is now an industriallyestablished steel. Tubes and pipes made from continuously castbillets have been manufactured. Long-term testing, which is stillcontinuing, demonstrates that E911 has a significant strengthadvantage over Steel 91, derived from the optimised)precipitation strengthening of VN and additional solid solutionstrengthening by tungsten. Metallographic data demonstrate thestability of the microstructure and therefore the long term strength of E911.The commercial products made from this steel have beensubjected to various tests to assess its suitability forapplication in high temperature, high pressure boiler systems.The paper reports on the success in developing weldingconsumables. The creep rupture properties of the completeweldment have been assessed to determine boilercomponent service and fabrication parameters. The effect ofcold work on creep properties and the material behaviourwith respect to stress corrosion cracking resistance have alsobeen determined. Stress corrosion data for E911 in as-welded and post weld heat treated conditions demonstratethat it can be fabricated easily and used safely.Preliminary results from a parallel programme involving thefabrication of a trial header by conventional methods and byHIPping are encouraging.
