The channel assignment problem is increasingly important in cellular radio networks. Since the utilizable range of the frequency spectrum is not unlimited, the optimal assignment problem for assigning appropriate channels among individual members of a cellular network is crucial for network designers. This study seeks a conflict-free inter-cell channel assignment that satisfies both traffic demand requirements and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) constraints. Specifically, this investigation proposes a novel and efficient channel assignment approach in cellular radio networks using a modified genetic algorithm. Applying this approach to a well-known problem demonstrates that this new strategy clearly outperforms some existing algorithms.
