For measuring the combustion quality of each cycle and each cylinder in a spark ignition engine the performance of the gasket ion sensor was estimated. The effects of operating conditions on the characteristics of ion-current waveforms were investigated. When the ignition timing and equivalence ratios were varied, the peak timing of ion current corresponded to the combustion phase obtained from the pressure histories or the heat release rate. The integral values of ion current from maximum peak timing to the timing of the exhaust valve closing increased as the maximum pressure increased. It was found that the first part of ion-current waveform is influenced by the flame propagation process and the latter part is influenced by the maximum pressure.
