Hydrogen (H{sub}2) promotes reactions for reducing NO{sub}x at low temperature. We studied a H{sub}2-passing catalyst for NO{sub}x reduction at low temperature in a system with upstream and downstream catalysts. Adding H{sub}2-passing capability is effective in utilizing the water-gas shift reaction. A Pt/CeO{sub}2 catalyst was selected and improved as an excellent material combination for this shift reaction. A system incorporating a newly developed H{sub}2-passing catalyst achieves higher NO{sub}x conversion for a diesel engine than a conventional catalyst system.
