Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion was induced in a 2-stroke single-cylinder gasoline engine, operated at an effective compression ratio of ε = 15:1 under conditions of a wide open throttle (WOT), a low engine speed and a lean air-fuel ratio. The cylinder pressure, heat release rate (H.R.R.) and light emission behavior of the OH and HCHO radicals were measured and analyzed in each case. In this study, external EGR rates and the octane numbers investigated the influence affect the combustion characteristics of a HCCI engine.
