The potential role of photonics in computer systems is an interesting research topic. Most published material on this topic has been authored by members of the photonics research community, who often have a point of view that is not necessarily shared by the designers of present computer systems. This presentation gives a view of a member of the latter community, based on the experience gained in attempting to include a photonic interconnect in a working multiprocessor system.
