A solvent shaking extraction method was assessed for the analysis of 14C-thiobencarb from rice field soils from Bangladesh. Three solvents, acetone, hexane and methanol were used to extract two types of soils, Silmondy (clay loam) and Sonatala (siltyclay loam). The extraction efficiencies using the solvents acetone, hexane and methanol were 68%, 69.3%, 74.3%, for Silmondy and 77.8%, 40.2%, 89.2% for Sonatala soils respectively. Solvent shaking methods that use small amount of organic solvents have the advantages of reduced waste, low laboratory hazards and minimum of radioactive waste.
