The antagonistic effect of the hyphomycete Ulocladium atrum against Botrytis cinerea was examined in grapevine under controlled conditions and in the field. The antagonist reduced the development of B. cinerea in vitro and on grapevine leaf material.Competition for nutrients and space proved to be the mode of action. In 1997-99, studies on biological control of grey mould by U. atrum were carried out in white grapes in different German vine-growing areas. Three to four applications of the antagonist effectively reduced B. cinerea on plant tissues during the season and on berries at harvest. Conidia of U. atrum can be produced with a high yield, stored with a reasonable shelf life and applied with conventional equipment. As sensitivity of U. atrumto many pesticides is low, alternating treatments with botryticides and the biocontrol agent is a potential strategy to prevent the selection of fungicide resistant B. cinerea.
