MANIPULATION CELL SIZE, PLANTING TECHNIQUE AND PLANTING DATE FOR PUMPKINS

Pumpkins have become a major vegetable crop in New York State over the past 20 years. According to the 2001 NYS Crop Statistics, there were 7,100 acres of pumpkins grown in New York, making it a leading producer in the country. Over the years, inputs,especially pesticides and seed costs have increase significantly. Fungicide applications have increased to manage powdery mildew and Phytophthora blight, while seed costs have escalated with release of hybrid varieties. Growers are looking at ways to maximize yields. With the increase in hybrid seed costs growers have looked at transplanting single plants rather than direct seeding a high number of seeds to ensure a good stand. In addition, transplanting may aid in cucumber beetle and weed control.
