USING NEW TECHNOLGY IN VEGETABLE MANGEMENT: IPM AND THE NORTHEAST WEATHER ASSOCIATION (NEWA)

Weather conditions play a key role in disease, insect, and crop development. Cornell and other universities have developed crop forecasts and degree day models to aid growers in managing crops. In the past it has been tedious and time consuming to implement these forecasts on the farm. One of the most important aspects of electronic technology in crop management today is rapid information access and exchange. This has been facilitated with the creation of the internet which can provide access to information in near real time. Pest and crop forecasts provide a key element to an IPM approach. Forecasts can reduce expenses and improve pest control. With this in mind the IPM Program was instrumental in creating the Northeast Weather Association.
