Characteristics of decarburization reaction and oxygen behavior in RH Degassing Unit

Behaviors of carbon and free oxygen in a molten steel during decarburization period of RH treatment were investigated using plant test results from RH(-KTB,-POSB) at Kwangyang Works, POSCO. The effect on the decarburization reaction of oxygen gas supplied from the oxygen lance for the KTB system was also investigated. It was observed that the decarburization reaction period in the RH could be classified into three stages in terms of the apparent reaction rate constants. The oxygen gas supplied from the KTB lance reacts with both CO gas and the molten steel in the vacuum vessel. A part of the oxygen on the steel side is consumed with the decarburization reaction as well as the increasing free-oxygen. The efficiency of blown oxygen both on the decarburization and on the increase of free-oxygen in the melt is changed by (C)/(O) in the melt at the start of oxygen blowing.
