摘要

High capacity long-haul transmission systems [1,2] can be realized with dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). Typically in long-haul systems, each channel operates at a data rate of 10 Gb/s. Recent papers have shown more than 100 channels being used to exceed 1 Tb/s of total capacity [3]. One way to decrease this large channel count, while maintaining large capacity is to use higher per channel data rates. The main disadvantage of using higher data rates has so far been increased non-linearities and increased sensitivity to dispersion slope. There has been recent demonstration of DWDM 20 Gb/s data rate experiments for as long as 3000 km using solitons [4,5]. However, 20 Gb/s DWDM transmission over transoceanic distances has yet to be demonstrated. In this paper, we show that DWDM channels with 20 Gb/s data rate can be transmitted over transoceanic distances using a carefully optimized reduced slope dispersion map.
