Market consideration for cotton on a global basis has placed greater emphasis on those measures that US cotton producers can do to enhance lint quality. In terms of harvest preparation, or the practice generally referred to as “defoliation”, the focus for most of the cotton belt can be best described as follows: DEFOLIATION= CROP TERMINATION AND QUALITY PRESERVATION Many factors are involved in crop termination and lint quality preservation, but they can be generally categorized into three areas: 1) weathering, 2) actual harvest aid used, and 3) harvest aid timing.
