Prediction of Extreme Wave Height with Satellite Altimeter Data

In this paper, the stochastic state of random sea is firstly described. Then, the method of extreme wave height prediction, especially "Tail Distribution Method", is discussed in detail. On the basis of these ,the extreme wave height of 50-year return period in the region of Yinge Sea, Hainan Province is predicted with Topex/Poseidon altimeter data from August of 1993 to May of 1997. Compared with the paractical extreme value 9.05m, the prediction of extreme wave height with satellite altimeter data is 9.03m. In other words, the difference between the practical and the prediction is less than 0.1m, which shows the method of extreme wave height prediction with satellite altimeter data can satisfy the demand of the engineering design.
