A new concatenated BCM code is presented in which a bandwidth efficient BCM code is used as the inner code, while RS code is taken as the outer code. Simulation result over the AWGN channel shows that coding gains up to 5.3dB can be attained over uncoded QPSK at the bit error rate (BER) fo 10~(-6). It only has a o.5dB distance from Shannon limit. If the inner code is properly chosen, the bandwith expansion due to coding will be greatly reduced. In addition, the decoding complexity is reasonable. This scheme is especially useful in the high-speed staellite comunication system where high reliability is required.
