The grain-refinement characteristics of three copper-base alloys-silicon brass (C87500), silicon bronze (C87600) and lead-free red brass-were studied. Three grain refiners-boron, FKM 2000 and zirconium-were used for the investigation. Zirconium refined the silicon-containing copper alloys, namely, silicon brass and silicon bronze. On the other hand, boron and FKM 2000 were the effective grain refiners for lead-free red brass. The hot-tearing resistance of the alloys was improved after grain refinement. The strength of silicon brass and silicon bronze were marginally improved, and the ductility of all three alloys was reduced significantly, following grain refinement.
