This paper presents a new method of calculating the baseline (or zero curve) for computer-aided cooling curve analysis (CA-CCA). Analysis of a melt's cooling curve can provide a wide range of information about the effect of the melt's chemical composition on latent head of solidification, fraction solid development, the nature of metallurgical reactions and dendrite coherency point characteristics. For aluminum-silicon alloys, cooling curve data can also be used to predict parameters such as dendrite arm spacing (DAS), the degree of silicon modification and the level of grain refinement.
