Phoenix: Making Applications Robust

Dealing with errors or exceptions is a very large part of getting applications right. Failures are not only an application programming problem but an operational and an availability problem as well. The Phoenix goal is to increase the availability of an application and in many cases avoid the operational task of coping with an error. There are two aspects of this: system Crashes: While database systems recover database state, the state of applications using the database, and their sessions, are "blown away" (erased). Our intent is to extend database recover to session and applications and application state. This will enable stateful applications to survive failures and continue execution.
