The role of unsaturated zone storage in maintaining the flows of Chalk streams and wells

Previous studies have computed the volumes of baseflow leaving Chalk catchments during long recessions, and compared them with the estimated change in storage in the aquifer during the same period. The studies have consistently shown that the baseflow exceeds the change in groundwater storage, often by an order of magnitude.
