The retail food industry is facing considerable pressures from international agreements and environmental lobbies to reduce their impact on the environment by increasing energy efficiency and reducing the effect of refrigeration systems on ozonedepletion. This paper reports on the development of a simulation tool which can be employed for the assessment of alternative refrigeration system designs for retail applications with respect to their environmental impact and life cycle cost. Somepreliminary results are presented which illustrate the usefulness of the model in assessing the influence of different control strategies on the performance of multi-compressor refrigeration systems.
