Fortesting the suitability of co-combustion together with municipal solid waste as an acceptable recovery route for automotive shredder residues (ASR) a two-weeks test program has been performed at a modern German municipal solid waste combustion plant. Up to 30 wt.% of a mixture of ASR have been co-fed. The program was co-funded by the Association of Plastic Manufacturers in Europe (APME) and the American Plastic council (APC). All solid residues have been tested for the effects of the ASR upon their quality, especially their leaching properties. The bottom ashes are the major stream in view of utilization which is common practice in some European states. The leaching stability of the bottom ashes has been examined after 12 weeks aging by means of standardized leaching test procedures: the German DEV S4, the Swiss TVA, and the Dutch availability as well as column test. The TCLP test required by the US EPA has been applied to artificially prepared combined ash according to the typical US disposal strategy and on the single solid residues streams, too. As a result of these investigations it could be pointed out that a co-combustion of moderate amounts of ASR will not only cause no problem with the quality of the residues but will have some benefits considering for example the improved burnout of the bottom ashes.
