The evolution of the Electrical and Electronic Distribution System (E/FDS) goes from discrete components to mechatronics and multiplex. In a concept description of the conventional system there are fuses in different locations, plug in relays, power switches, and dedicated electronic controllers. Based on a current vehicle architecture this paper analyses the Opportunities of improvement with the help of Power Zoning concepts and Smart Junction Boxes (SJB) and compare the two in terms ofwiring, connectors, splices, cost, project management, and reliability. There are a number of technology solutions for SJB available in the market place. More specifically this paper highlights the Multi Purpose Board Technology as it supports different combinations of power switching devices, protection components, such asfuses and polyswitches, and control components such as microcontrollers and electronics. Temperature effects, EMI (electromagnetic interference) mechanisms, reliability impact and extended features are briefly discussed.
