A variety of current and pending federal, state and local regulations will force some operators of stationary internal combustion engines to provide some form of emissions monitoring to demonstrate compliance with applicable limitations orstandards. Of the various options available, Parametric Emissions Monitoring Systems (PEMS) are usually a cost-effective and reliable option.Therefore over the past five years, Advanced Engine Technologies Corporation (AETC) has participated in over half a dozen company and industry funded PEMS projects aimed at assessing and/or demonstrating PEMS representativeness, reliability, accuracy andprecision over both the short and long term. In the process, AETC has evaluated innumerable emissions models based on a variety of parametric methods.While many PEMS models offer satisfactory performance in specific applications, one particular class of models, utilizing peak combustion pressure as a primary input, consistently offer outstanding performance across the breadth of lean burn engineapplications. This paper will first review the derivation and development of those models. It will then review the performance of the method when applied to a variety of open and pre-combustion chamber two and four stroke cycle, spark and compressionignited engines. Finally, the paper will examine the applicability of the method to engine emissions monitoring and control.
