An experimental analysis of fretting behaviour in the case of thin polystyrene film lubrication is presented. A 52100 bball-flat (low alloyed steel) contact was used for testing. The imposed sisplacement amplitude, applied pressure and film thicness were varied. Dynamic force analyses in combination with subsequent metallographical examinations have shown that an inclubatin period prior to film failure depeneds upon fretting conditions. The fretting process s a function of the number of cycles was emphasized and identified by visual analysis. Polystyrene film as a palliative for fretting damage is discussed and explored.
