The fretting and reciprocating wear are dependent on the sliding condition and on the nature and properties of surfaces. hard coatings are already well known for their properties to reduce werar in classical sliding conditions. The aim of this paper is to compare friction and wear behaviour of TiN coating and High Speed Steel (HSS M3) in contact with a 25.4 diameter alumina ball, with a sliding amplitude varying from +/-25 to +/-200 (m under a normal force from 50 to 200 Newtons. The transition to reciprocating is evaluated through an exposure ratio between the displacement and thecontact radius (e chemical bounds D/a).
