The large ampunt of research which has been devted to the nature and manifestation of fretting over the past 50 years should enable engineers to take account of its possible occount of its poss8ble occurrence in a preliminary design and to make the necessary modifications to avoid it. An example is given o f such modifications in the design of a bearing. Where this is not ossible surface engineering is available with a wide variety of possible treatments including shot peening, ion implantation and lard surface coatings. Reports of fretting damage should be much less common in the future!
