Across the world the agreed phase out schedules for the HCFC R22 have led to the development of non-flammable zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) replacements. Most of these have included R32 as one of the blend components and require fullysynthetic lubricants such as ester based oils, but there is one non-flammable replacement that has been developed which does not utilise R32 and can be used with traditional lubricants in the majority of applications. This paper discusses the developmentof the blend comparing the performance characteristics under laboratory conditions. Several leak scenarios are investigated to ascertain the theoretical worst case scenario and considers the implications on flammability. Finally the oil transportproperties are investigated in order to assess the suitability of using the blend with traditional oils.
