Pollution assessment of historically contaminated soils with petroleum products

Several methods may be applied to decontaminate recently or historically polluted soils. In order to determine which method is the best to decontaminate one certain historically polluted soil, an assessment of that soil should be done. This work present the assessment of a historically hydrocarbon polluted soil from chemical and biological point of view. Chemical analysis revealed high concentrations of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (ΣPAHs), namely 15.967,4 mg/kg d.w. and 57,322 mg/kg d.w., respectively. Since the load of contaminants in soil was very high, remediation efficiencies that are required in order to accomplish the limits of the regulation in force are 99,37% and 99,82% for TPHs and PAHs, respectively.
