Coating iron powders with other metallic materials can modify their magnetic properties. Placing materials of higher resistivity on the iron substrate can isolate each individual powder particle and allow them to respond almost individually to the magnetic field. Nickel is well known as a coating material for bulk substrates and therefore it was selected as a modeling material for this study. Nickel and then manganese coatings have been applied to water atomized iron powders. Examinations of the coated powders in terms of coating uniformity, their chemistry, and microstructure are presented. Additionally, magnetic characterization of iron powders with different coatings has been performed. A special attention has been paid to the interface region between iron and coatings material as well as that between different layers of coatings. The influence of coating on magnetic properties is discussed.
