SMC Materials - Including Present and Future Applications

SMC (soft magnetic composite) materials are engineered particles that can be applied as stator cores for electrical motors operating at low to medium frequency. This material group has grown rapidly in recent years and a variety of materials and strength property combinations can be achieved to fulfil the specific demands of applications. This paper aims at describing some SMC materials in detail. Additives are a normal requirement in the mass production of powder components, as lubrication for easy removal of the component from the tool is required. Thus all the materials described contain lubricant and are suitable for mass production with conventional powder metallurgy technique. In the case of SMC materials, where the thin insulation layer must be maintained, additives may also be used to increase the strength. Each specific application requires a suitable combination of magnetic properties and strength. Some examples of applications with SMC materials are discussed.
