Spatially Referenced Census Data System in HK: Evaluation and Applications

Hong Kong conducts a census and a by-census every ten years. A large amount of improtant information about population, education, employment, housing, income and migration was colelcted in these censuses and by-censueses. THese census data can be widely used for population and socio-economic research and planning. The value of the census data could be enhnaced dramatically by linking them with spatial inforamtion and making then available in electronic form. Electronic version of Hong Kong census data has been produced to failitiate the wide use of the census data for planning, academic research and business. This paper will examine some amin features of the Hong Kong census data sets and the potential applications of the spatially referenced census data system (Population GIS). The limitations and problems of Hong Kong census data will also be discussed. The experience of Hong Kong's census data system will shed light on the development of similar census data systems in other countries and regions.
