In the Netherlands,especially in residential build up areas,an energy infrastructure basd n small scale cogeneration is theretically the best option.Gas is the optimum medium to transport energy,and converting this primary energy into power and heat in the dwellings themselves will lead to the highest overall efficiency.Such a small cgeneration system exists of a micro-chip unit in every dwelling,producing heat for hte central heating system and for the productionof sanitary hot water,and producing the base load (800-1000 watts) of electricity.Gasunie Research is studyign techniques for power genration in micro-chip units,like Stirling engines,gas engines,thermoelectrical modules and fuel ells.At Gasunie Research two of these technologies,the Stiring engine and the thermoelectic modules,are now used in owrking prototypes.After the tests in the laboratory the expectations for both technologies are high.Projects for field trials and demonstration,which will start at the end of this year (1997),are in preparation.
