The research and development of panicle reinforced aluminium matrix composites has been conducted for decades. The basic concern is the interfacial behavior between the matrix and reinforce phase (usually non-metallic refractory) which shows considerable influence to the properties of the composites. It is suggested that the reaction processed composites, in which the reinforce particles are formed in Situ, may eliminate the effect of the oxide layer on liquid aluminium, thus have the advantage in improving the wettability of reinforcement by aluminium and the mechanical properties at room and elevated temperature. The reaction and thermodynamics aspect of Al/CuO system were studied. Al-Cu/Al_2O_(3(p)) composites may be manufactured by the reaction occurred in the system, and both alloy element Du and reinforce particle may be produced through the reaction. The experiments for reaction processed Al-Cu/Al_2O_3(p) composites were conducted. Two consequent reaction in Al/CuO system, the phases formed, the size and distribution of the particles, the appropriate process parameters and the dynamic aspects of the reaction have been studied. The method to depict the distribution homogeneity of the panicles in composites is proposed by the authors.
