Photonic structures consisting of dielectric columns in air, with suitable physical parameters exhibit a stable (T_m10~(-5) bandgap around λ=1.55μm, using N = 13. If a central defect plane is introduced in such a structure, it can operate as a filter at any chosen wavelength for small grid numbers N. For specific BG and wavelengths, the EM field is enhanced in the defect plane and allows switching operation if the defect is made of a nonlinear material. Using Kerr nonlinearities, which don't induce absorption seems appropiate to obtain efficient devices.
