The surface treatment with high power beam sources, such as laser or electron beam, is a well known process to improve the properties of carbon steels at the rim zone corresponding to industrial stresses (1). Under the influence of a focussed beam, the surface and the underneath material is heated by absorption and conduction processes and then cooled down quickly byconduction into the cold workpiece. Comparing to other processes, the surface treatment with beam sources enables a local heat treatment without a large thermal influence on the workpiece. Therefore, minimal thermal stresses and deformations are generated on the workpiece. Unfortunately, the maximal beam power limits the irradiated spot size (2).
