Arch bridge for crossing choshui river to divert flow into sun-moon lake for power generation

Hydropower plant complex around the Sun-Moon Lake comprises two pumped-storage and three conventional hydropower plants, and one long diversion tunnel to divert water into the Sun-Moon Lake. The total installed capacity of the complex is 2766.4MW and depends solely on the water stored in Sun-Moon Lake for power generation. The water stored in the Sun-Moon Lake is diverted from Choshui River at the Wuchieh Dam via the existing diversion tunnel which was constructed some sixty years ago. The existing tunnel has been found to have serious and irreparable cracks on originally lined concrete. After an elaborated study, it has been found technically feasible and economically desirable to construct a new horse-shoe type tunnel with diameter of 5.05m and length of about 15km to replace the existing one. At the same time, the new tunnel can also be utilized for future development of upstream power plant. The tunnel is designed to be of gravity type with a longitudinal slope of 1/1500.
