PRIORITIZING ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES IN NIZHNH TAGIL BASED ON THE ASSESSMENT OF HUMAN HEALTH RISKS DUE TO AIR CONTAMINATION

1. The average annual concentrations obtained are good for evaluating health risks and making decisions on reducing risks. The results to date require the continuation of this work, particularly in the area of PM10, for which we are completing a health risk assessment. 2. No conversion factors to estimate single peaks are capable of providing valid annual average concentrations required for health risk evaluations. 3. The experience gained can be beneficial for other areas suffering from air pollution problems. We have managed to surmount multiple challenges of adaptation of American approaches to Russian conditions. The health risk method authors proved to be right stating that risk management is not as much an environmental but an economic, political and social problem. The fact that similar work has been started in Krasnouralsk and planned for other cities of the region speaks for its prospective usefulness. The difficulties and problems involved in implementing these approaches are surmountable.
