A new resin transfer molding (RTM) process has recently been developed by L&S Composites that can generate composites with a smooth and/or glossy finish on both sides. This new process is called VIMP (Variable Infusion Molding Process). This low cost and production-oriented process is efficient enough to allow gravity fed processing without a vacuum. This proprietary process also allows resin to be transferred from the inside of the composite instead of from the outside of the composite lay-up. This process is currently being used for the production of tractor fenders and canopies and has the potential for developing other products that require a finish on both sides. This paper will briefly discuss the processing of these tractor parts with examples of the type of finish that can be obtained. Also the cross-sections of these parts will be described showing how the resin is effectively transferred through the inside of these parts during impregnation. VIMP is OSHA and EPA friendly and is projected to allow improved compliance over existing composite processes as addressed in the ANSI/ISO 14001-1996 standard.
