Advanced fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites made of resin impregnated fibers have the potential to become a prominent reinforcing material in the twenty-first century for the construction industry. However, the processing method as well as the constituent materials of these advanced composites are critical, because they determine the material's properties as well as the long-term durability. Advances in fabrication, ability for post bending, improvements and consistency in mechanical properties, proper selection and formulation of resins, and strict quality control are some of the issues that make a clear distinction for the new generation of FRP rebars. This paper reviews the advances made in the design, manufacturing, and field applications of C-BAR~direct R reinforcing rod. A cost comparison between FRP rebar versus steel rebar used in a major sea wall renovation project is highlighted.
