In the late 1960's I was a member of the UK Delegation to the International Institute of Welding. Some of the conversations that I had with delegates from the, then, Eastern Bloc countries were particularly interesting. These gentlemen were very knowledgeable when discussing the finer points of the vacuum brazing techniques that they employed for the joining of the super-alloys that permitted the Sputniks, the Vostoks, and finally the Voskhods to fly. However, in our private conversations it was clear that they thirsted for the detailed knowledge that would enable them to advise their 'local' manufacturers on the brazing of the 'simple' components needed for domestic refrigerators, water heaters, carbide tipped tools; and the host of other items that represented the backbone of the Industrial brazing technology of the West.
