Gastric ulceration in horses-treatment

The goals of gastric ulcer therapy in horses are to eliminate clinical signs, promote ulcer healing, prevent ulcer recurrence, prevent complications, and reduce cost and duration of treatment. Major differences in gastric physiology, pathophysiology, anatomy, and eating habits between humans and the horse preclude extrapolating human antiulcer therapy to the horse. In addition, most gastric ulcers in horses are associated with the nonglandular portion of the stomach which is lined by stratified squamous epithelium and these lesions may be more closely related to reflux esophagitis in humans rather than gastric ulceration.
