Many research efforts have been conducted recently in CETIM in the field of mechanical surface treatments and their effects on fatigue behaviour. This paper gives a review of these studies. For instance, recent developments in advanced materials (Metal Matrix Composites, monocrystal materials) and advanced processes are described. New trends concerning the modelling of residual stresses induced by classical techniques (shot peening and cold rolling) are also discussed. Lastly, a comparison of most of the mechanical surface treatments is proposed.
