Construction of underground works in urban areas must ensure the safety of the works itself as well as that of the nearby environments. It is well-known that effective prediction in design, use of reasonable technology and consideration of environmental details in construction are the necessary conditions for successful implementation of environmental protection i.e. so called "environmental geotechnology". In recent years, some experiences, both successful and unsuccessful, have been accumulated with respect to prediction, prevention and control of environmental detrimental effects under the construction of underground diaphragm walls in soft soils saturated with water in urban areas in Shanghai. Especially, the various environmental detrimental problem during excavation work (mainly caused by non-uniform settlements of surface layer of the ground near the excavation and the interference with busy traffics under construction) of deep and large excavation works are very serious. Many cases happened hereof may be encountered elsewhere, and it seems worth presenting here to colleagues abroad for reference.
