Physico-Chemical Determinants of Hard Soil and Soft Rock Characteristics

Soil-water-environment interactions in some problematic hard soils such as stiff-fissured and overconsolidated clays, and soft rocks such as soil-like shales, weathering rocks, limestones and dolomite are complicated. The textural heterogeneity of weathered rocks makes it difficult to design effective clean up systems for these media. In this paper, further evaluations of mechanisms of fluid/solid interactions in these types of soil and rock are presented. It is hoped that this additional information may lead to improved techniques for analysis and design of geoenvironmental projects.
