ACADEMIC SESSION AT THE CASTLE OF LAEKEN: PRESENTATION TO THE KING ALBERT II

This Twentieth Solvay Congress is concerned with the characteristic fea-tures of chemical reactions induced by absorption of light and the control of those reactions at the level of the molecular dynamics. In one sense the sub-ject matter of this Congress can be thought of as a natural extension of what was discussed at the Thirteenth Solvay Congress, in 1965, under the overall title "Reactivity of the Photoexcited Organic Molecule." However, because of advances since 1965, this Congress focuses attention on issues very dif-ferent from those examined earlier. In particular, this Congress addresses questions related to several of the most fundamental issues associated with the dynamical evolution of photoexcited molecules.
