Evaluation of Exhaust Odor in a Direct Injection Diesel Engine

Exhaust odor is one disadvantage of direct injection diesel engines. Usually, the evaluation of exhaust odor involves sensural sssessment by humans and it is difficult to evaluate the odor level using a chemical analyzer. In this study, pH measurements of an aqueous solution of condensed components of exhaust gas, formaldehyde measurement with a reduction FID system and sensual assessments using eyes and nose are investigated, It was found that the correlation between the pH and sensual assessments vary, and the formaldehyde (HCHO) concentration in the exhaust gas shows a correlation with the degree of eye irritation.
